Unit 1

Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions

  1. Do you consider your own culture more of an individualist culture or a collectivist one? Give an example from your own experience to support your view.
  2. Do you feel more comfortable living in a society with high or low uncertainty avoidance? Do you think most people in your country are like you?
  3. Currently, the highest numbers of foreign students in Taiwan, aside from Asia, come from the U.S.A. and France. Use #1.b in the Resources section to compare how Taiwan, the U.S.A., and France score on the Hofstede Dimensions. Who do you think is more likely to encounter greater difficulty while studying in Taiwan, an American student or a French student?
  4. Select a foreign country where you would like to stay for a period of time, and compare its culture to your own culture using #1.b in the Resources section. Do you think you may encounter difficulties when you are living in that foreign country? What kinds of difficulties?
  5. In what areas or fields do you think Hofstede’s model will be useful? #1.c contains several examples for your reference.
